Obama Warns of H1N1’s Return as Administration Outlines Preparedness Measures

President Barack Obama joined the White House’s H1N1 Preparedness Summit by phone to warn that “the potential for a significant outbreak in the fall is looming,” although he expressed “fervent hope” that a crisis might be averted.

Officials outlined plans for a vaccination drive. Safety and efficacy tests will be conducted in August. If the results are positive, then a vaccine drive will begin in October, but although experts expect tens of millions of vaccine doses to be available, they do not anticipate having enough product to conduct a broad program targeting all Americans. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius said that the government will likely focus on school children, healthcare workers, pregnant women, and people with asthma and other conditions that place them at increased risk for serious flu-related complications.
CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden addressed concerns regarding an oseltamivir-resistant strain of H1N1 stemming from a single case: A teenage girl on a flight from from San Francisco to Hong Kong had a fever on arrival and was hospitalized. She did not develop serious illness and was not treated with oseltamivir, but viral sequencing revealed that she had a strain of H1N1 that is resistant to the drug. New York Times.
